  • FISSTA CHAIRMAN APPEALS TO ALL IRISH ANGLING CLUBS TO SUPPORT FISSTA IN FIGHTING THE IFI TAKEOVER OF OUR GWEEBARRA WATERS

FISSTA Chairman Paul Lawton has appealed to all in angling to support FISSTA and Tafi’s Gweebarra 3 campaign in conjunction with the Donegal Game Anglers Federation whose members are facing serious legal charges in the courts at present. Fissta PRO and Secretary Noel Carr is coordinating the campaign along with Tafi Chairman Charles Kennedy. IFI have singled out three prominent protesters John Boyle Rosses Anglers, and two from Cumann Iascairi Baile Na Finne Runai Peadar o Baoill and Sean R O Baoill and are in the Supreme Court appeal at present.

    SAD TO ANNOUNCE

In the middle of an angling federations meeting last Friday night in Dublin Bob Seward from the breakaway salmon and seatrout rec anglers if Ireland or sstrai called STRAY let it slip that they supported the Ifi legal action against the 3 anglers defending the taking of our traditional club waters on the Gweebarra river in Donegal. Such betrayal of anglers rights were rewarded by grants to aci and board appointment to sstrai. This treachery will never be forgotten.

In what was a cold wet morning on Wednesday 2nd April last our Fissta protest group were there to confronts the minister at the Aviva stadium on Landsdowne rd where BIM hosted a seafood conference. Fair play to the Minister for dropping in for a chat rather than being driven around to a more secure entrance. He said his decision will take more time. We live and hope.

  • EDWARD POWER RIP

    Ed Power Obituary

The sad passing of Edward Power from Clonmel, who was our serving Vice Public Relations Officer, is a huge loss to FISSTA and Ireland’s country sports. Irish angling has greatly benefited from his participation with this federation where he was a true leader of our decreasing salmon and seatrout fisheries. Just like his beloved wild Atlantic salmon who knows no borders, his advice was highy valued on both sides of the Atlantic by anglers, scientists and managers alike.

Many in angling did not realise that as a former Director of Transport at Bulmers in Clomel he was also held in very high esteem as evidenced by the very large crowd attending his funeral on the 28h February last. Eddie was a key member and officer of Irish Angling bodies from his early years as but his major achievement was as serving as FISSTA National Chairman in 2006 when the ending of the driftnets was announced. He was a former Chairman of his beloved Clonmel and District Salmon Anglers and served in many officer positions throughout his fruitful life that left a legacy which we all acknowledge. . He was a strong defender of Irish country sports and served on the NARGC board for many years with distinction. However, through his love for salmon and trout sportfishing he became a legendary leader of anglers who kept the pressure on many governments at the crucial times when salmon stocks were at an all time low due to over fishing. His strong qualities of public relations and management completed the international campaign to end the wild salmon driftnets that surely save the species from extinction back in 2006.

His professional contribution to his beloved River Suir and the town of Clonmel was immense having served as Transport Director of Bulmers with distinction. He is survived by his beloved wife Mary and was the much loved father of Anna, John, Alison and Kenneth who gave a very moving homily to a packed church at his funeral Mass.
