In 2010 the then Gaeltacht Minister Eamon O’ Cuiv TD parked all investment in salmon farming until he was satisfied the industry was sustainable and not killing migrating smolts. That was then and this is now as we wait Minister Coveney’s decision to open the floodgates of disease and pollution that comes with salmon farming. Some epitaph for a minister Ang government that they killed the wild salmon to create a few unsustainable jobs. RECORD SEATROUT CAUGHT IN WATERVILLE

A Record fly caught seatrout was caught on Lough Currane on October 1st 2013
by a well known angler and FISSTA Chairmans Paul Lawton from Lee Salmon
Anglers. Paul was fishing with local anglers Liam Ellis and Peter Muldoon landed and released an amazing hen sea trout of 14.75 lbs! The fish measured 89.5cm long with a girth of 45cm.The capture was notified to IFI and here is the
comment received back from Dr Willie Roche:
“Based on previous length and weight information for specimen sea trout
from Lough Currane Willie Roche from Inland Fisheries Ireland estimated
that this enormous sea trout weighed 14.75 lbs or 6.69 kg. This estimate was based on length and weight information from 57 sea trout from the Lough Currane system over the past three years and was provided by the Irish Specimen Fish Committee. In 2011 UK angler
Sean Smith had a specimen of 13.31 lbs (6.04 kg), a record sea trout for the fishery, which was 83 cm in length. Lough Currane has been the most consistent producer of large sea trout for many decades and the record for the lake has been broken a couple of times in recent years.”

Paul Lawton is Chairman of FISSTA and has worked hard for the conservation
of our wild salmon and seatrout for many years. When told that he had to
kill the fish to claim his Irish Specimen badge, he protested, by immediately released the fish as the photographs show. Well done Paul.
