A report into the socio-economic challenges facing coastal communities has
recommended that the Government focus on maximising the benefits of inshore fishing and aquaculture.

The report said it is essential that people doing business on the islands and in rural coastal areas get relevant assistance to safeguard the economic
viability and sustainability of the areas in question.

The report was drawn up by the Oireachtas sub-Committee on Fisheries.

It also recommended that governance of the maritime sector be streamlined, to reduce bureaucracy and assist new businesses.

The committee said Bord Iascaigh Mhara should provide certified training
courses in fishing communities and that an increased focus should be placed on sea angling as a tourist activity.

It suggested that “heritage licences” be issued to facilitate traditional fishing practices.

The report also said any major aquaculture or marine energy projects need to have a clear “community dividend”.

It called for the publication of detailed Irish Marine Institute inspection reports into sea lice controls in Irish waters.

The report is being published by members of the committee on Inis Oírr this afternoon.
