  • Wild Atlantic Way? Only if the cages are gone.

Wild, rugged, unspoiled. First 3 words in failte Ireland’s youtube video of the waw or wild Atlantic way. Not a salmon farm cage in sight. “Come to the Coastal island of your dreams.” But sadly not Inver Bay, Mulroy Bay or the banks of the Swilly where cages and even pylons and turbines will spoil our WILD ATLANTIC WAY.

    angling as a tourist activity

A report into the socio-economic challenges facing coastal communities has
recommended that the Government focus on maximising the benefits of inshore fishing and aquaculture.

The report said it is essential that people doing business on the islands and in rural coastal areas get relevant assistance to safeguard the economic
viability and sustainability of the areas in question.

The report was drawn up by the Oireachtas sub-Committee on Fisheries.

It also recommended that governance of the maritime sector be streamlined, to reduce bureaucracy and assist new businesses.

The committee said Bord Iascaigh Mhara should provide certified training
courses in fishing communities and that an increased focus should be placed on sea angling as a tourist activity.

It suggested that “heritage licences” be issued to facilitate traditional fishing practices.

The report also said any major aquaculture or marine energy projects need to have a clear “community dividend”.

It called for the publication of detailed Irish Marine Institute inspection reports into sea lice controls in Irish waters.

The report is being published by members of the committee on Inis OÔö£┬írr this afternoon.

Scotland ??????used as back door?????? to ship salmon to China

    Sales to China hit ?????37m

SCOTLAND is being used as a ??????back door?????? by Norway to ship thousands of tons of farmed salmon to China, environmentalists have claimed.

Since 2010, when the Chinese authorities imposed trade restrictions on Norway after a Chinese dissident was awarded the Nobel peace prize, exports of Scottish farmed salmon ?????? about 66% of which is controlled by Norwegian-owned companies ?????? have rocketed by more than 6,000%, from 111 tons to more than 7,000 tons.

The disclosure, by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, shows the value of farmed salmon exports reached ?????37m last year.

It has prompted environmentalists to accuse Alex Salmond of pandering to China??????s demands for farmed salmon at the expense of wild fish on the west coast of Scotland. On Wednesday, Salmond will open the salmon fishing season on the River Tay at Dunkeld in Perthshire.

Campaigners will urge the first minister to call a moratorium on Scotland ??????used as back door?????? to ship salmon to China.
